5 Mistakes To Avoid When Running A Craft Business

by: Jennifer Clason

These are some mistakes to avoid when selling crafts or owning a craft business.

1. Don't borrow money to start your craft business
Craft Businesses are high-risk business ventures, don't borrow money on something that may or may not sell. You could only find yourself in deeper water later.

2. Don't follow trends
Trends in crafts come and go, don't base your business solely on what's hot right now. It's okay to sell trendy/hot items, but make sure you also have a variety of other items for when this trend is no longer popular

3. Don't underprice your crafts
Make sure your prices reflect your supplies, your shipping costs, and for your work. Many people underprice their goods and end up taking a loss and learning the hard way.

4. Don't confuse your demographic
Are you trying to sell ceramic cupie dolls at the monster truck races? Make sure that your craft reflects the tastes of the audience at the shows you attend.

5. Don't be thin skinned
It's inevitable that when you're running a booth at a trade show there will always be people with a big mouth who will knock your items. This happens to every single crafter. They might say something like, "$8.00 for this! I can buy this at K-Mart for $1.00!". Don't let it discourage you. They are ignorant to what things actually cost and how to be tactful in public. Plenty of people will buy and be satisfied.
