Craft Show Tips

by: Leslie Norman

Are you selling at your first Craft Show or Craft Fair? Here are a few tips to know before jumping into it.

Don't spend too much
Buy the bare minimum supplies that you need for your booth. Can you get by with an old cigar box or do you really need a cash register? You don't need the best equipment when first starting out, can you buy used? Don't go spending your profits foolishly!

Start small, get bigger
Start out at the smaller trade shows and work your way up. See if your items sell at your $15.00 booth before spending $1000.00 on a booth.

Keep your prices simple
Although Marketing 101 tells you that you should price your items at $X.99 or $X.95, however this doesn't apply at a craft show. Especially if you're not using a cash register. Do you really want to add $2.99 + $3.99 + $8.99 quickly in your head or do you want to add $3.00 + $4.00 + $9.00? It's much easier to keep the numbers at even dollars. Plus you may not always have the coin change for odd priced items, just keep it simple.

Keep track of what's selling
Are you all sold out of blue scarves but cannot sell a single yellow scarf? Keep it in mind that blue scarves sell better so that you can make more of those next time. However it may be just a fluke or location specific that the blue scarves sold better. What color are the local sporting teams in that area? Make your crafts in those colors to boost sales.

Have good craft show etiquette
This is important. Most professional crafters already know this unspoken etiquette and therefore no one may tell you up front, but there are certain etiquette rules to follow such as:

  • Don't take up more space than your booth
  • Don't bother your neighbors if they have customers
  • Don't set up your booth making your displays force people to stand in front of others' booths
  • Offer to help others to watch their booth if they need to visit the restroom, etc.

After you read these simple rules to attending your first craft fair, you are well on your way to become a crafting professional!
