Have
you always wanted to open a website but didn't know how to
begin? Here are a few lessons and explanations to get you
started.
Picking
a domain name - At one time domain names had a lot of
relevance on Search Engine Optimization. While they still
do have some relevance, they don't hold as much water as they
used to. Especially the hyphenated domains like: get-paid-to-work-at-home.com
are not the type of domains that you want to choose.
When
choosing a domain name for your site, it's better to pick
something that's no more than 3 words long and easy to remember.
Which is easier for you to remember and type in: mommyjobs.com
or workfromhomeandgetrich.com? You want repeat visitors, so
make your domain easy for them to remember!
Choosing
affiliate programs - An affiliate program is a company
that will pay you for promoting their products and services.
Usually you refer sales to their site and then they give you
a percentage or a commission for every sale you refer.
Choosing
the right affiliate program is not rocket science. There are
many sites that review affiliate programs guiding you to the
best ones, but beware - sometimes the affililiate programs
pay the site to get higher marks on their site! Just simply
post on a webmaster message board and ask what the best running
affiliate programs are, people will give you feedback.
Network
with other webmasters - Even though other webmasters are
potentially your competition, it is great to build a network
with them so that you can swap link trades, get business ideas,
learn from them etc. The best place to meet other webmasters
is to read some webmaster message boards such as:
http://www.webmaster-forums.net
http://www.mainstreamwebmasters.com
http://www.findlinktrades.com
Learn
tools of the trade - At the very minimum you should learn
HTML before having an Internet business. You should have at
least an intermediate understanding of computers and the Internet,
and you should pick a website authoring program such as Macromedia
Dreamweaver.
Another
great place to start is with this eBook by Internet guru,
Michael Cheney called The Website
Marketing Bible. I personally own this eBook and it's
a little bit pricey but worth every single penny. I learned
a lot just in the first chapter.
These
are just very basic principals that you need to know before
getting started on your own website. There is a lot of research
to be done and skills to learn in order to have a successful
online business venture.
