Page Title Tips

by: Jennifer Clason

One of the most important aspects of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is what appears in your page title. The page title is the information that's way up at the top of the browser to the left hand side in the title bar. This article will provide you some tips in choosing the best page title for your website and therefore optimizing your site for the search engines.

1. The title is the page title, not the site title - People generally confuse page title with site title. In the html source code, the page title is displayed between the <title> and </title> tags, so that you may know how to change it. The page title does not appear within the main page of the website window, it's in the upper left hand side of your browser and it should be completely different wording than your site title.

2. The best titles are short titles - About 2-9 words maximum in length. It's a myth that you want to stuff your title full of all of the keywords you can think of. Save that for the META tags and keep your page titles short.

3. Each page on your site should have it's own title - A lot of sites use the same page title to keep consistency throughout all of their web pages, this is a very bad practice to get into. Each page on your website should have a unique page title. Since search engines index all of the pages on your site, it's best to keep them distinguishable from each other with unique page titles.

4. Use keywords in your page title - You should always put relevant keywords in your page title, but don't blatantly stuff the title with keywords. You should never have phrases like "Welcome to Our Site" or "Home Page" in the page title, instead you should describe each page for instance if you had a site about German Shepherds, your page title should read something like: "Information on German Shepherd dogs and how to care for your pet". Just something obvious, relevant, and keywordy. Try not to repeat the keywords more than once and if you insist on putting your site name in the page title, it's best to put it at the end of the title rather than at the beginning because the words towards the beginning have more weight with the search engines.

When combining these page title tips with good SEO, you'll find that you'll get higher search engine rankings and therefore more traffic to your website. Page Title Optimization is one of the most important, if not THE most important, aspects of good Search Engine Optimization.
